I never thought this would possibly work but decided to try it out in my Shuttle SN21G5

I have the upgraded Shuttle PC-50 300W PSU installed which is rated at 21.5A between the dual 12V rails - powering an X2 4200+ @2.4ghz, 8800GTS OC, 160GB raptor, 1Gb Kingston HyperX, X-Fi and an NEC DVD/RW drive.

The system boots right up just fine and chugs along with no issues under heavy loads from 3DMark05 / 06 and gaming with BF2142.

I did have to dremel away a small section of the rear side chasis frame and of course I used a window modded case cover that I had cut previously to fit a 7900GTX.

Now I'm seriously considering buying an SD32G2 Shuttle, so that I can use my C2D E6700 with the 8800GTS

****4/21/07 UPDATE****

I have an XFX 8800GTX installed in the SD32G2 now! Cheesy

For the increased power demand of the 8800GTX, I added a Thermaltake Power Express 250W PSU in the optical bay. I used a PCI-E molex splitter from the Shuttle PSU and 1 PCI-E power connector from the Thermaltke PSU - efectively splitting the load between the two PSU’s.

The system runs extremely cool and is nearly silent, I have been gaming on it pretty hard and it has been 100% stable.

It was a bit tricky to get the card installed as there is practically no clearence in the front. I ended up removing the single slot PCI bracket from the rear of the card and setting it up in the rear chasis frame bracket (loose) and worked the card into it, then mounted it to the board afterwards.

I’ll post some pics later when the GF comes back with my camera!

Nice mod!  Curious how loud it is, being that the video fan assembly is essentially on the outside of the case.  Also, how are your idle/load temps?

The 8800GTS fan is completely silent!

Since the fan draws cool air from outside the case and also exhausts hot air outside of the case  - the entire system runs substantially cooler. My CPU temps are 32 idle / 46 load and the GPU idles at 57C

Sweet... damn thats a lot of work, my SD32G? is begging for a GTS but I hope to mod the card rather than the case or wait/hope for an ATI alternative.

Nice job.

MOD the case!!!! I have been using a 7800GTX 512, then 7900GTX with a double slot cooler with various Shuttle G5 chasis for some time and it works very well! The GPU stays very cool and does not dump heat inside the case with this setup.

Shuttle sells extra case covers or you can always find them cheap on the for sale forum.

I may have you beat. I had an 8800 GTX and an X6800 in the SD32, without any exterior mods Wink

I must be old school, don't believe in water near a box....If it isn't water cooled show me, very interested.

EDIT: hmm.....From my measurments ~11" is the best you can do in a G case. The GTX is ~12".......

Regarding temps I've had exactly the same experience after installing a 8800GTS into my SD37P2 case. The 8800GTS actually draws air from inside the shuttle and exhaust it outside. It generates airflow, and I can completely agree that the fan on the 8800GTS is seriously quiet!

How is that possible?  The card is longer than the case...

I might be a convert.......can you give me any tips/pointers.
EDIT: Like what is used to cover the cut edge of the cover? How much is cut from the chassis, card?

BTW, Hows it running?

I just received my SD32G2 - so I will take some pics as I mod the rear chasis frame side. ( I only have to cut away a small section of the rear/side support frame to allow the double slot cooler to fit. I used auto door edge gaurd on the case cover edge.

See my sig for hardware specs

After completing the mod to my SD32G2 chasis - I swapped faceplates and covers so that I now have a black SD32G5 Wink

This is definitely the most powerful Shuttle system I have ever built! I have been playing BF2142 on my new Gateway 24" monitor @1920x1200 with high details and 4XAA, 16XAF and my framerate averages above 50FPS during online games up to 48 players!

Here's my 3DMark scores with my CPU overclocked to 3.0ghz and my 8800GTS Overclocked to 615/1900

3DMark05 score = 16787

3DMark06 Score = 10045

Actually, the GTX is 10.5" long. So it may have been possible.

Kenshibby, pics please.

@dworley
Thanks for the info, the GTS and cover are on the way. Think the GTS will arrive first so my G5 will be the first to be cut. Don't know about obstruction of the outflow with the chassis support post. We shall see...

Don't ya love it, I did the same thing...a little more of a project than I expected. But I do like the G5...

If the GTX fits I will be upset, but don't know if the PC50 could handle it.

HOLY CRAP! Too bad you can't do that on the P2 chassis, since I'm not really a big fan of the front on the G2/G5

Sorry to dig up an old post, but im very interested in doing this.

Now youve had an additional month or so to play around - is it still all plain sailing? Or is there heat / power issues that have raised their ugly heads?

Im also wondering about damaging the gfx card as it seems quite open - i attend a fair few LAN parties and its always a worry transporting stuff, especially when it looks so 'open'

Any further thoughts on your setup?

Also how hard was the 'cut out' mod on the side of the case for a novice?
