The linux kernel developer community has offering free linux driver development to hardware manufacturers, ie. if they want to provide 100% linux support for their hardware, it won't cost them anything.  AFAIK, this is the first time the kernel developers have made such a commitment.

This is much needed.  The other major feature needed is a stable kernel API for device developers with backwards compatability between kernels at least within the same full point release.  Good link Shagbag.
