I thought that I'd have a go at the latest Ubuntu testing release http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/herd3 so I ran it as a liveCD and all went well with the update manager having in excess of 200 updates queued since the creation of the  liveCD. I noticed that some of the updates related to proprietary drive issues as described by http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/95 . I may well get around to installing this into one of my free partitions and sometime soon take it for a slightly longer test drive but you never know if something else might catch my eye.

Slightly off topic but I expect you've already seen the announcements: link.
