I'm stumbling thru compiling a client to run SETI on my Linux /PPC.  Its looking for the latest  libcurl3-dev latest version which is 7.16.1. I tried a package manager to add it but it didn't work. I have downloaded the source, configured it, and ran make. Can anyone advise what steps I need to take next, particularly where to put it (/usr/bin/curl?), and presumably how to remove the old installed 7.15.4 version? My brain has gone numb.

It's best to uninstall an older version before installing a newer one.
Your package manager will allow you uninstall the old version.
After you've run './configure' and 'make', you need to run 'make install' to finish the installation process.
There's usually a README file which comes with the source code which may answer some of your questions.
