I was playing around with The Gimp tonight and made some wallpapers for my Gentoo box. Please tell me which one you think is the best (if any). Desktop 1: Desktop 2: Desktop 3: Desktop 4: P.S. I plan on using one in a linked theme for my Gentoo box, ie. I'm going to choose one image and use it for all of (a) GRUB splash (b) kernel gensplash, (c) GDM bootsplash, and (d) desktop wallpaper.

I like the gradation on #3 best.
I don't know how to break it to you, though. It looks like someone shot a hole clean through your boomerang.

I like #3 the most, then #1. The gradient emerging from the panel is cleanest to me.

**Update** I've created a menubar background to match the Gentoo symbol (see FireFox's menubar in the below screenie). While it's a match for the Gentoo symbol I'm not sure if I should try to match it to the desktop wallpaper 'glow' instead, ie. make it more of a purple-black to start with blending into white (rather than the current purple-white blending into pure white). What do you guys think? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the feedback. I've changed the menubar but which one do you think looks better purple-to-black or black-to-purple?

The results so far... A few niggling problems I'm having: 1. the thin grey lines between the toolbars/menubar - I can't see how to get rid of them 2. the dark font in the large toolbar makes it impossible to read the text (back, forward, up) - I can't see how to change it to a white font. I'm still trying to get these bugs fixed but it's coming along quite well, I think. Learning heaps in the process as well - about GTK and how it interacts with downloaded icon themes, gtk-2.0 themes and metacity themes.

the "glass effect" looks cool - like the "Zune" theme for XP

Thanks for the feedback. I had a look at the Zune XP theme and I see your point. It's VERY basic to achieve - just 2 layers in GIMP. One layer containing the colour and then a top layer with a semi-transparent, fading white colour. Here's one with an Ubuntu flavour (more like the 'brown' Zune?):

those grey tab buttons look a bit incongruous though - I was thinking more about the "taskbar" at the bottom.

Latest development: Change log: 1. Fixed the 'grey buttons', except for one - the '100%'. This is a bug within Nautilus. A bug report has been filed and I'm currently trying to work around it. 2. Removed the thin grey lines between the menubar and the toolbars. 3. Removed the reflection/light effect from the menubar and toolbars. 4. Changed the handlebox in the panel (the gap between 'Computer' and 'Gnome Support Forums...' ) 5. Changed the Metacity Theme (window borders)

Update: Change log: 1. Changed Gentoo panel icon in 'Computer' (extreme bottom left) 2. Fixed resolution issue in panel - reflection now one continuous line with no 'breaks' caused by faulty image resolution 3. Created 'glow' when mouse hovers over minimised window in panel (see 'gtk-2.0 - File Browser' in panel bottom left) 4. Hidden minimise/maximise/close icons in window frame - they only light up with a mouse over
