What could be a good idea perhaps is that you have shifs at what times companies should work (not all companies) on a weekly or monthly basis or longer..

You have less traffic on the same time > no cars which are stuck  less fuel as an outcome and saved time.
So 1 week you start at 8 and a week later at 10 (example).

But this would be an attack on freedom Wink But at least all government workers could put this in practise as a tryout? And later on the rest when it works out well.

if you work in downtown Chicago, you'll actually see companies have different operating hours according to their locations.

Quote
People use the excuse that farmers need it - I say the cows dont need to look at their watches to work out when to come home and when to get milked.  Hopefully we can end this lunacy soon

Actually, if you read the article posted by the moderator you'll see that the farmers don't need it.  That is why when it was instituted in 1918 it proved very unpopular.  Farmers tend to get up and go to bed earlier, and therefore it is less of an issue.  But for the rest of, we go to work at 7AM or 8AM or whatever...no matter what the daylight situation is.  So if I get home at 5PM everyday then that is what time I am going to switch on my lights.  If it is light outside because we switched the clocks forward then I don't need to turn on the lights, thereby saving energy.  Multiply that by millions of people and the energy savings might indeed be worthwhile (I'm not a fan of it, but just relating information).

As far as Chicago is concerned...are these business closing early based on daylight or based on demand?  When I worked in downtown Los Angeles, businesses opened and closed with demand.  Businesses that cater to largely office/business areas tend to close earlier because office workers go home.  If workers stayed to 10PM everynight, then I am sure the local establishments would stay open later too.

FYI, although I'm not 100% sure, that's for reducing traffic jams by making employees go to work at different hours.

You seem to be totally missing it, reflex. Most businesses open during early morning light most people go to work to open those businesses. And they would still do it that way, even if the clock said 25:30 So rather then have the businesses change their hours of operation as the hours of light change, they make everyone change their clocks.

And the 1 hour backward/forward doesn't compensate for the day light hour change anyway. About 1 month a year it is dark at 6:30pm where I live and about another month it doesn't get dark till about 8:45pm which is a 2 hour and 15 minute difference of daylight hours.

I understand that statement, x586, and I agree.  But you made the following statement as well:

I still say it is a money thing,
and having been in software and hardware development myself I have to wonder who the heck is making money on this?  It costs millions to re-test everything and that money is simply wasted.  I don't see who would be making any sort of money on this.

It's about controlling and organizing and to a lesser degree saving, money. Business is money, see my second post in this thread again and add up it all up. Think big picture.

I remember when I was a kid, back in the late '50s, the time change was not the same, either where I lived or where the TV shows originated, I don't remember.  I thought it was neat, though, when the shows that were ordinarily supposed to start at 7:30 or 8:00 started an hour earlier where we lived, so we could get our TV watching over earlier.

Anybody else had trouble sinking with time.nist.gov since a week or few ago ?
After two weeks I finally had to switch my NTP server to tock.usno.navy.mil .

By the way...

Don't forget to turn-off the time-adjustment feature on automatic clocks otherwise you'll be adjusting them 4 times a year.

What, you really want us smelly, fat americans coming up there with our urban assault vehicles shooting at your wildlife while drinking beer and brandishing US flags?

Remember, we have as many guns/capita as you...  actually SK has a thriving business catering to American hunters... but they all have to apply for tags just the same as Canadians...

Your tagging American hunters?  Figures, now I know why I keep seeing guys in floppy hats with tracking equipment hiding behind bushes around here...

Well - we can track them from our igloos by smell alone, but it's easier to use subdermal GPS - wave of the future and all that...

Those tags you're talking about... they don't require that they be placed on the big toe do they ?
