DisplayPort 1.1 gets ratified

Just when you thought HDMI was starting to ramp up, DisplayPort has had its latest specification ratified for use in CE products.

DP, as we amusingly nickname it, supports double the bandwidth of DVI, whilst using a connector more suited to inclusion on small, portable devices.

It's very easy to liken DisplayPort to a royalty-free version of HDMI, but... who are we kidding? It's really is just a royalty-free version of HDMI, designed so that Intel et al can avoid paying thousands of dollars every year to a company that isn't 'one of them'.
...
So what happens now? Well, given that HDMI has already achieved a pretty decent market penetration in consumer devices, it seems likely that it will live on in consumer players and TVs. However, when it comes to PCs and notebooks, it rather looks like DVI and VGA could be replaced by DisplayPort over the next few years, much as DVI has replaced VGA during the last few.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it's actually the new connector that makes the display so thin, it's the lack of A/D converters and their belonging peripherals . If they made displays today which are not compatible with VGA we would see the same thickness. (since VGA is an analog signal). And HDMI is far away to replace DVI for computer / graphic cards. This would force nvidia to intregrate audio decoders in their chips. (since HDMI is basically DVI plus digital audio)

Supposedly, DisplayPort is going to win out for PC stuff because it's cheaper or free to license and HDMI you have to pay to license to use.  But since it's already fairly entrenched in A/V stuff that it may stay popular in that market.  Who knwos what will happen.

Displayport is a smaller, more functional connector than VGA or DVI, allowing for daisy-chaining of displays, bi-directional communication and video and audio over a single cable.

This will be a great feature for those of us doing shows and displays on multiple projectors. At the moment VGA has to be continually amplified to each device, but with a daisychained digital signal we'll have next to no signal loss and only occasional use of amplifiers. Wonder if the monitors will be able to split sections of the image off creating a video wall?

I found another article that said volume production in the second half of 2008. That seems a bit vaporous.

Do you guys think that DisplayPort will give rise to the mass production of flexible LCDs?

This seems a bit odd: FOTOS: AMD Radeon HD3450, HD3470 y HD3650

The HD 3450 has a DisplayPort connector, along with VGA.

The HD 3470 has DVI and VGA.

The HD 3650, contrary to an earlier report, has dual DVI and a TV port.

Why would the new connector go only on the lowest model of card?

Tuan actually works there.  They've been around in Asia and Europe for a little while but have yet to come to the US.

Hmm, I've honestly never heard of them. Anyway, they have DisplayPort info posted on their web site:

•  ZOTAC commits to DisplayPort technology
•  DisplayPort equipped products ready to go
•  Will ship DisplayPort NVIDIA-based graphics cards when customers demand
•  DisplayPort equipped graphics cards will maintain DVI and HDMI compatibility with adapters

I did a Google product search and turned up quite a few DisplayPort cables for sale. 10 ft seems to be a popular length.

DisplayPort Direct Drive

Genesis Launches DisplayPort Direct Drive Monitor Controller Solutions at 2008 International CES
...
"Direct Drive" monitors employ DisplayPort and high levels of silicon integration to greatly reduce the complexity of both the LCD monitor itself and the interconnect when compared to conventional monitors using VGA or DVI interfaces.
...

If I understand this correctly, manufacturers could get rid of the legacy VGA and DVI connections and build & sell DisplayPort-only monitors much more cheaply.

If this is a PVA or S-IPS panel I'm sold, I've got like $125 in credit with Dell...

8800GT with DisplayPort from MSI

This doesn't clear anything up:

In order to make the signal cable as less as possible, DisplayPort protocol further pull in the auxiliary channel which can let other peripherals such as USB HUB, webcam and touch screen device share the very same cable with video/audio signal. This design makes PC connectivity even more extended and convenient at the same time.

HDMI, Displayport quickly replacing DVI

The DVI interface will is headed for retirement, as HDMI and Displayport are establishing themselves as successors for the interface...

This is quite "forward-looking," since I can't even buy any $%!$% DisplayPort graphics cards, and the only monitor vendor with product on sale is Dell with two models. Sell me something - please!

Just waiting for the Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP to make its debut.  DisplayPort included and very nice panels typically.  Got $225 in Dell credit right now, with another $100 on the way, should make that panel very affordable especially if I can catch it with one of the deals running.
