I just don't see the point in having Display Port now that HDMI has stabilized and consumers like myself are up to speed on it. I don't really see the benefit to me a a consumer. Its just confusing. I have HDMI and very happy with the digital video quality. I invested quite a bit in my system: HDTV with HDMI input, PS3, Cable DVR, ATI vid card with HDMI all connected to a HDMI switch to share them. Most of the sales folks at the stores are barely literate on HDMI issues as they have just been trained. Then to just confuse us with Display port sounds like a losing proposition. What is the benefit? Will display port have better picture quality? |

DisplayPort is more "modern" than the other interfaces (packet architecture rather than raster). It also supports higher resolution. Once VGA and DVI go away, it will be between HDMI for consumer media stuff, and DisplayPort for computer stuff. That shouldn't be too confusing.

(packet architecture rather than raster) This is the real advance. Right now DVI and HDMI are seriously constrained on resolution due to their signal design. They can do up to 24" LCD's at native resolution fine, but you have to use dual link to drive a 30" LCD(ie: two DVI signals). Displayport eliminates this bottleneck, and will allow for future resolution independent designs for monitors(ie: the OS or media resolution is independant from the display resolution, which will provide far superior scaling and much better image quality). |

I don't believe Display port will succeed. The competing standard , HDMI , is finally reaching critical mass and the public is and has been educated about it over 3 years, and that itself is a major hurdle. I have all HDMI equipment and very happy with it . I don't see what Display port will do for me as a consumer. Anyone know of any value that may been visibly seen by going to Display Port? HDMI and DisplayPort are not in competition with each other. HDMI has limitations that do not make it ideal for PC's, while DisplayPort is missing features that are useful for televisions.

Audio, for one. I am also unclear if it supports HDCP. Also the architecture is completely different, HDMI is a parallel connection, DisplayPort is serial, which enables a lot of new possibilities(like resolution independence, device chaining, etc) that make sense for a PC but little sense for a TV.

More importantly, it meets the needs of its target market perfectly. Higher resolutions, such as offered by Displayport, are useless when all content is being coded for 1080p.

and all the manufacturers have already paid their HDMI group entry fee or whatever, so DisplayPort being cheaper (free?) to license is kind of a moot point.
