The SG31G2’s stock 250W is barely enough for a Q6600/8800GT combo

so all you need do now is go find the power consumption for each card under load and if the 4850 uses less then you're fine, more and you might have to take a gamble

8800gt runs 152 idle and 247 under load

while

4850 runs 131 idle and 251 load,


based on that information you can conclude that 4850 actually runs less power on load and slightly higher on load,

But checking other reviews there are a lot of discrepancy

as you can see, it gives a different result, here 8800gt is 113 watts on idle, which has a 19watts discrepancy on toms hardware, that's roughly 2 lightbulbs lol.

and in load,

the 8800gt consumes 190Watts and that's a 57 watts discrepancy,


now on the same site, the 4850 power consumption is 119watts idle and 208watts load, both values is slightly higher than a 8800gt

so I just want to hear a person with the same setup, rather basing on the reviews, since there is a lot of discrepancy

The sg33g5 has the exact same 250w psu that the sg31g2 has
Not to mention all the AMD setups whose CPUs may not be quads but have the same power consumption.

Edit: Well, it seems I misread that you were looking for 8800 instead of 4850
I would think there's about 10-15w difference judging from the techpowerup benchmarks you provided.
The discrepancies between the two reviews on tom's is likely due to them using different cpus,mobos etc from each other since they were taken at different times.

I do believe it will work with the 4850, but your overclocking will be limited. Plus, an RMA is the worst that could happen

Software wise I'm running a dual boot with Windows Vista 64-Bit Ultimate Edition and
Ubuntu Linux version 8.10 64-Bit version.
The computer has been running ok for about 8 hours now.
I searched the forums, but  didn't find anyone with the same case and video card so I took the gamble and bought the card and figured I'd let you guys know if it worked.

Now I do have a few questions, from what I've read on the forums, I might be pushing the PSU to it's limit. Would you guys recommend I upgrade my PSU to the 300W model which I think is my only option? Also what temps should I be expecting? Right now my temps at idle (just surfing webpages, outlook and word 2007 open , and listening to music) are: case temp is about 46-48C, my CPU is 42-44C, and my video card is at about 58-60C with it's fan at 60%.
The case is luke warm, and the power supply is warm but not really hot.  I currently have the ICE fan set to SmartFan in the Bios (for some reason the XPC tools doesn't work in Vista 64Bit) and every thing is running at stock speeds and I don't plan to overclock anything in the system.
I still can't believe the power we are able to put into such a little case. All I can say is Shuttle, you have a new lifetime customer.
My scores in Vista are 5.9 for eveything which is the highest score possible, except for the HD which got 5.7

So what do you guys think? Any comments or recommendations on fan speeds or my PSU?

It should handle it all with no problems. On the first couple pages of this thread, there are some ST20g5 and SN95g5 users that have the same 240w PSU you do, running more power intensive components. Especially since your hd4670 does not require extra power through a pcie plug.

The humble overclock on the GPU was done safely through max OC settings in ATI's CCC software.

All is stable and running Vista 32-bit seamlessly. I originally had a Geforce 7900GS, but replacing it with the HD 4670 raised my 3DMark06 score from 4083 to 8094. The OC raised the score again to 8711.

I was looking for a forum and opinions about this trick. (crap english inside)

Running a 4870X2 on a Shuttle 450W PSU

My actual system:

SX38P2 pro
E8400 @ 3.6 Ghz, voltage auto.
4 GB of Gskill @ 400 Mhz, 4-4-4-12, @ 1.9v (4 sticks / 1 GB)
Sapphire 4870X2 @stock
And of course, harddrive, dvd-burner, 6 USB peripherals, etc...

When I bought the 4870X2, my CPU was a E6400 at 3.2 Ghz. The system was running quite fine, but when launching a heavy 3D app (Crysis, Vantage, etc...) the shuttle was allways turning off suddenly. Total power consumpsion was of approximately 400W before crashing.

So I tryed a trick. Like many PSU, the 450W Shuttle PSU got two 12v. Both of those 12v can deliver 16A. The first one is used for the motherboard 4 pins connector, and the second one for... the rest (the 6 pins, all sata/pata connectors, etc). Looking to the power consumption of the 4 pins connector with a dual core, 16A is just enormous, while 16A for "the rest", including the 6pins and the 8pins adapter required by the 4870X2, is just not enough.

The "trick". The 6 pins connector of the 4870X2 is powered normaly, with the 6 pins connector from the PSU. But for the 8 pins, I've build a custom adapter to take the power from the 4 pins connector. I mean, the 4 pins on the motherboard, which is powered by the over 12v rail.

The system is runnig for month, total power consumption under Crysis / Vantage is of 410W with the E6400 @ 3.2 Ghz.

More recently, I bought a E8400. Yes, it's not really more powerfull than a E6400, but @ stock (3 Ghz), power consumption goes from 410W to 380W, and at 3.6 Ghz, it's less than 390W.

Since the power consumption of the GTX295 is better than 4870X2's one, quite sure this awesome 3D card can run on a 450W PSU without any trick.

Zalman VNF100 for the NVidia, and Scythe Mini-Kaze 40mm silent fan arriving tomorrow.  9600GT fan is just a monster (and the 100% thing when you are not running an OS/driver really does get on my nerves), and the Scythe mini fan will go under the drives and push air toward the ICE/Intel fan.  This has also helped drawing air in through the sides while testing with an older fan, and should team up with the ICE nicely to take heat away from the VNF100 heatsink.

Edit: So I added the Hauppauge HVR-1600 TV tuner card and it was a snug fit to say the least. A couple of soldering points that holds the metal case for the cable tuner was actually stopping the graphics card fan. After trimming just the bottom two (The top two I left to push the graphics card away to let some air in) the fan was spinning fine again. It's a tight fit and of coarse the heat went up for the GPU. It idles at 60-62c and when watching TV in 7MC it goes up to 66c. Still acceptable for me. I haven't played any games yet. The GPU fan is much louder though as there isn't much space. It kind of whistles, ha. It's in a loud room so not that much of an issue for me. The CPU temps remain the same.
