Hello everyone,
I was wondering if someone can give me an idea to why a 45W processor would idle over 65 degrees Celsius with an NT06 Lite
My setup:
Silverstone Sugo01 Black Windowed Corsair HX620W Silverstone NT06 Lite Amd X2 BE-2350 45W Abit NF-M2 NView AM2 2gb OCZ Gold Rev 2 XFX Fatal1ty 8800GTS 320mb 3 X Noctua 80mm AXP Thermal Control Panel Samsung DVD Writer 'Writemaster'
I think the heatsink should be re-fitted, is this the case? Isn't this supposed to be idling at around 35 degrees?!
Thanks!

Holy crap, you serious? Have you tried re-seating the heatsink? Maybe there's too much thermal paste? Man, there's really no way a be-2350 should get even remotely that hot, unless you installed it in an oven. What about the temp sensor on the motherboard? I'm not entirely familiar with abit boards, so I don't know whether or not there's a precedent for them having incorrect temp readings from time to time, but it's a possibility I guess.
I've known folks that are using fully passive cooling on their BE-2350's and getting less than 30c idle temps, you should be sitting around there, at the very least. I would highly suggest re-seating the heatsink and checking the thermal paste layer for possible air bubbles, or buildup.

Motherboard seems to be in cool condition, but the NForce is idling around 73 degrees celsius, Fatality is idling around 65 degrees celsius... I believe that is due to the processor being so hot, I used to use a Zalman 8000 with the BE-2350 and it used to idle at 59 degrees(I thought that was pretty warm even if this isn't the right cpu cooler to use in a Sugo), so I'm getting worse results since I got the NT06-lite passive which doesn't make any sense...

ok my opteron 175 is only hitting 55C tops under load (idles about 30C) and my cpu is nearly 3 times the BE2350 at iirc 105W rating. I would say as your old cooler (a fairly good cooler too) was saying its 59C then I think there could be a reading issue or you've got a screwed up cpu/motherboard etc. EDIT: cool and quiet is enabled isnt it, although temps are still too high

The CPU settings are on default in BIOS, I think cool n quiet is already integrated in Vista which I'm using... I fixed one problem I think, I had a sensor between the CPU and heatsink which caused some extra heat... I removed that, now the CPU idles at around 50-55 degrees celsius which is an improvement, but no cigar... Any other thoughts, thanks for your input so far!

not using am2 or vista but I would assume there would be a bios bit for cnq like on my s939 boards and as with xp the power saving settings may need setting up accordingly.

I'm now fairly certain your board is not reporting the correct temps. Download either coretemp, or everest (I recommend everest more, since it can display temps for everything, including gpu) and post what temps it gives you for each core.

Everest has definitely posted more accurate temperatures, idling temps reached 48 degrees celcius... Its still fairly warm I suppose, re-fitting the heatsink is the only remaining thing left to do I suppose?

Yeah, try that. And make sure to read the individual core temps, not the 'motherboard' or 'cpu' labeled temps, as those sensors are located on the motherboard, while the core sensors are inside the chip itself. Core sensors are pretty much always exact.

Nice and thin layer of thermal paste.

From what I've read the Corsair PSU fans don't spin quite fast enough to draw a good amount of air to cool a CPU. People generally either use a different PSU or replace the 120mm fan in the PSU with one that is then plugged into the CPU fan header on the motherboard. I'm trying the fan mod as soon as my new scythe fan gets here.

I chose the Corsair because I've read that its one of the most solid and silent power supplies money can buy... I never thought about the possibility that the fan in the Corsair wouldn't spin fast enough.. Replacing the fan in the Corsair is not an option, but just out of curiosity what power supply would perfectly compliment a fanless NT06-lite for any CPU in a Sugo?
Keep your good ideas coming.

well my liverstone psu doesn't seem to keep my cpu cool with NT06, i reverted to the intel heatsink

hell yes. or at least it does with a Quad core. the NT06 was hitting 60 idle and 75-80 load
currently got the intel one in and i barely breach 50 under load, albeit it is loud compared

A passive silverstone nt06 is as good if not better than the heatpipe cooler from the amd opterons (s939) with a fan attached. As I said earlier my opteron never goes above 55C on load, but as the nt06 is passive it means less noise. The problem with the quad and the nt06 is due to the fact the quad is a hot chip, probably outside the ideal thermal capacity of a passive cooler - if you stuck a fan (stronger than the psu) on it it would be more than likely fine.

I sold my Fatal1ty graphic card which has been also an issue with heat I suppose but not that much...
The cpu now idles around 40-42 degrees celsius... Looks more normal now?

Much better! but its still running hot in my opinion. Compare with my temps and its still idling 10+ degrees above my chip and it has about 60W lower tdp threshold. I would hope its down to the cpu temp sensors being read incorrectly.

Hi
Sugo 03, Nt06, E6850, 4Gb ram, 8800GTS320, 2x120mm fans with 1 being a PWM running at about 400 rpm on CPU header, the other runs at full speed 1200rpm
Core 0=16 Core 1=16 system=26 highest temp seen was 30C taken from speedfan
