Shuttle SS40G Barebones review
Title Gradient

Well we can finally change the graphic on our front page that says “They’re Coming...” because they are here.  We reviewed the Shuttle SS50 a while back, and today we are happy to be able to present you with a review of the highly anticipated Shuttle SS40, now called the SS40G.  You have probably seen plenty of information on these systems by now, but today we are going to show you a bunch of pictures of the new system, as well as some performance numbers, temperatures and sound levels.  Will the SS40G be what you are waiting for?

Let’s take a look.

First off, the CPU's in these systems aren't quite equal.  The AMD is an 1800+ meant to compare with a Pentium 4 1.8GHz, however our tests of the SS50 used a 1.7GHz.  So it's close, but not quite the same.  In the CPU tests, the Athlon comes out on top, but in the Memory tests, the Pentium 4 flexes its memory bandwidth and comes out ahead.  Still, the SS40G puts out some good numbers.  However, there is no support for 333MHz DDR, which would have been a nice addition, though that wouldn't improve performance by any considerable margin.  Overclocking also isn't going to turn out so well.  The SS40G has four settings for the CPU/SDRAM/PCI clock - 100/133/33, 133/100/33, 100/100/33, and 133/133/33.  There also are no voltage controls.  But if you are looking to overclock a CPU, this probably isn't the box for you.

In the next test, 3DMark 2001, the SS40G pulls away from the SS50 by a small margin, likely because of the faster CPU.  This trend continues for Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament.  The Quake 3 scores were very good, and at normal quality, 640X480, the SS40G was almost able to hit 100 FPS!  This box is definitely capable of gaming with the help of a fast CPU.  We should be getting some PCI GeForce 4 MX420 cards in and we will do some tests with that and post an update.

The last test, Sysmark, shows that the SS40G can be a very powerful machine for any type of office or content creation task.  Quiet, small and stylish, the SS40G would make an excellent box for doing work, or having some fun.

What is the SS40G Good For?:

The SS40G can do just about anything!  In our SS50 review we showed you several things that it could do as a system.  Check that out right here.  The SS40G can do all of those things, and do them better.  It is faster in games, many times quieter, and I think it just plain looks better.  Here is a quick list of what you can do with the SS40G.  Check out the SS50 review for more information, or hop on over to our Small Form Factor Forums.
