When it comes to Linux netbooks, PC manufacturers should act more like cell-phone makers and telcos by selling customized and subsidized machines with online services. That’s according to Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin who believes the Linux netbook market is not realizing its full potential, because those making the machines - PC manufactures - are employing an outdated business model. And that’s giving Microsoft time to catch up to Linux, raising the prospect that the company simply replicates its domination on laptops and desktops.

Linux has suffered in recent years in the graphics driver department. The two biggest graphics vendors, AMD (formerly ATI) and nVidia offer closed-source drivers, but this does not fit well with the open source nature of Linux. The open source drivers for ATI and nVidia, radeon and nv, are ageing. Intel does the best job of supporting an open source driver for its embedded graphics chips. There is hope for improvement on the horizon:

AMD has released some data on their GPUs to the open source community, and OpenSUSE has put together an effort to use the data for an open source 3D driver, RadeonHD. You can find recent install kits here.

There is also an effort to put together an open source 3D driver for nVidia cards, the result is Nouveau. The Nouveau folks have a tougher job, since nVidia is not releasing specs. A version of Nouveau was included in the Fedora 8 release.

Both of these drivers are in the early stages, and contain bugs and lack features. Just recently radeonhd added support for XRandR, which allows dual-head configurations, and Nouveau is actively working on this. Neither driver supports XVideo at present. If you want to help out on the bleeding edge, get involved. If you’re simply a user waiting for a stable product, it’s going to be a while.

Meanwhile, at lower end, the openChrome driver for VIA chipsets is making progress, and a version is available in Fedora 8. It seems to run on the CN700 chipset and supports XVideo.

I like Knoppix a lot, it has all the tools ready to use like Firewall and TV Tunner software.
Ubuntu 64-Bit did not have these installed, however it’s speedy and I can access my HD unlike Knoppix.

That said, How do get the TV Tunner work with my ATI AIW x600 Pro in Knoppix?

I’m also looking at Linux as my main OS, if Wine will work my all of my Graphic Design apps like CorelDRAW & Dreamweaver.
I’m also looking more at AV apps and some 3D too.

I can get more Linux help (Networks) in East Texas than Mac Help (Graphic Designers). BestBuy now has the iMac, still in the box, but they have just one…
