A more silent SX38

Hi all,

I’ve been wondering what to do to make my SX38P2 Pro more silent. I’m totally fed up with the noise it makes.
My first idea (without any thought to the matter) was to move the innards to another case and fit a full fledged atx psu and other goodies to get it silent.
I quickly abandoned that idea as the mobo does not sit well in a normal case due to the fact that the pcie slots are on the “wrong” side.

Then I went back to the idea I had a while back. Changing the PSU and the cpu cooling set.
Silvertek has a nice 450w sff psu (http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_spec.php?pno=ST45SF&area=usa).
After I read a few reviews I came to the conclusion that it should handle the load at least as well as the shuttle psu.

I’ve finally found a PSU that should fit the shuttle case rather nicely, but I’m totally lost on what I should get for the CPU.

So do you see any challenges for using that psu and do you have a good recommendation for the cpu. I’ve read the forums from left to right
and I’ve noticed all sort of solutions, but is there a cooler on the shelf that sits nicely on the mobo. I will probably pair a nice cooler with a bigger fan on the side and some sort of tunnel to isolate the cpu (not quite there yet as I don’t know what cooler to get).

Any and all help much appreciated.

My current set:
sx38p2
E8400
8gb ram
1x hdd
dvd writer
8800GT 512Mb

Cheers!

Watercooled SX38P2 mod log

Hey everybody! Long time no see! I hope life has been as kind to you all as it has me!

Ive had this computer for a while now and originally intended to do this mod straight away, but real life (in this case mostly my master thesis) got in the way. But now after almost two years I decided it’s about time to get started!

Even though the box is old(ish) it still performs very well. The games I play goes on 1920x1200 and max settings and I rarely notice any fps-drops. Even in daily use I’m known to stream 1080p from rar-archives with hundreds of firefox tabs open while coding in Visual Studio or running some Matlab calculations, and the box keeps pace nicely. So I have no issues spending money on watercooling it regardless of its age. The main goal is silence, but if it turns out I can also get some nice clocks all the better.

The specs are as follows (all at stock):
Shuttle SX38P2
Intel Q6700
Nvidia GTX260
2x2Gb HyperX cl4 800mhz
WD Velociraptor
Samsung Spinpoint 1Tb

Key mod parts:
Laing DDC 3.1 (or mcp350/ddc 1t) with Phobya plexi top (formerly known as OCLabs XPTop)
- Widely accepted as the most powerful silent pump out there, especially if used with a good aftermarket top. The Phobya/OCLabs top isn’t the best of the best but definitely in top contention and probably the smallest of the bunch. More info and good testing here: Martin’s Lab DDC top roundup
Watercool Heatkiller G200 gpu-block
- THE gtx260 block. Check why here: Eiskaltmacher gtx280 block roundup
Watercool Heatkiller Rev3.0 cpu-block
- Can’t find the source right now but, most newer block roundups are tested on i7 which really isn’t the same thing, but IIRC it’s supposed to be one of the standout quadcore blocks. Very similar in design to EK Supreme or D-Tek Fuzion v2.
SanyoDenki San Ace Silent 120x25
- Three of them actually, two on the rad and one to be mounted on the soon to be chopped up front panel. San Ace are known for realistic specs and good pressure and airflow for its noise level. Cost of importing to Sweden that makes me wanna curse… Found here: San Ace at Newark
SanyDenki San Ace 80x15
- Used to be called “Petite Ace”. Is to replace the PSU fan that is driving me nuts. The 12v version of the fan with same specs found here: Petite Ace at Newark
Swifttech MCR220 QP
- Some people seem to dislike Swifttech but this could well be the very best slim radiator available. It also happens to fit perfectly in the top of the p2-box. I estimated top heat load to be around 400w during heavy gaming for which this rad with these fans gets a deltaT of about 11-12 (MCR220QP at Martin’s Lab). More info on deltas can be found here: Guide to deltaT at Overclockers.com but short of it is you want cpuloops to have delta below 10 preferably and gpuloops below 15. Since I’m working with some restricted space it should be good enough.

--------------------------

Layout:
For those wondering how the **** I’m supposed to fit all this inside a P2-box here’s some sketches of the planned layout:

Harddrives are to be mounted together in sound dampening frames and mounted on the swivel originally holding the cpufan so I can reach the insides better when installing the watercooling. Pump and t-line placement is really the biggest question mark. Don’t know for sure where they’ll fit until I install them.

Airflow sketch:
I’m not 100% on this. Pulling cold air from the outside and through the radiator is assuredly best for the rad, but maybe I should reverse the psu fan as well and then reverse front fan to pull out all the hot air. Or maybe even set all fans to blow inwards and force the hot air to escape wherever it can.
SG31G2 - graphics card for 2010!

Hi,

I’ve got a 2-3 year old Shuttle SG31G2 (quad core Intel processor + 3GB RAM) and want to upgrade from the on-board graphics having recently installed Live for Speed! I’ve searched the archives but most graphics card recommendations for this machine are out of date. What should I get given a budget of £50-100? I don’t want it to be excessively noisy and I don’t want to upgrade anything else on the machine (e.g. power supply). Any suggestions from the current crop of graphics cards that will definitely fit inside my machine? And will 512Mb be enough or should I go for a Gb card. Sorry for the basic questions and TIA.

Project OSIDIAS begins!

Hey guys! I though I’d take the time to repost the planning thread for my next project. It’s been an ongoing thread at bit-tech for several months now, but I thought I’d get you guys in the loop. It was started before I was a member here, so I apologize for the cheap copy and paste job I’m about to do.

I’m also going to repost with everything unedited. While some things may seem out of context, it’s probably the best way to show the evolution of the project. So, I hope you enjoy it, and I appreciate any comments you might have!

Feb. 6

Hey guys, I’m throwing around ideas for another new case… I’ve been sketching up some ideas and wanted a little feedback. Keep in mind that what you are about to see, is unfinished, and missing some key details. However, I like the concept, but I want your opinions on how it all fits together.

Okay, here is the core of the case. It’s SFF of course, and it’s damn tiny due to efficient space usage. I’m planning a DFI X58, SLI, full size PSU, 4 full size hard drives, pico, and watercooled CPU in this little package. Due to it’s design, it should also run fairly cool. As of now, I don’t plan on deviating much from this except for details like adding mesh, or possibly windows.

I was then inspired by a RED camera cage I saw, and wanted to add a more industrial and sci-fi look to the case. The following is what I came up with. Of course it’s subject to revision, but wasn’t sure how it all fit together.

Opinions?

Feb. 8

I’ve been playing around… what do you think of holes? Or maybe some variation of this?

Okay, one more here. I added vents to the side panels. What do you think… too many holes? They will have mesh behind them, with the exception of the most forward hole, that will have a window…

Feb.10

Well, I didn’t have as much time as I had hoped for last night, but I did make a few small revisions. I made the side window slightly smaller, and added another opening beside it. Even thought the window is still larger than the rest of the openings, the spacing between them is consistent. Also, I added matching holes the the ‘cage’. I’m unsure about the abundance of holes now, but I need the airflow. There will also be mesh behind them, so they won’t stand out as much as the vents, for example. Speaking of mesh, I created some mesh with 1mm holes… Lol, talk about a CPU killer! I’ll have to revise that… :D

Now, this next part is just for Xtra. He wanted to see the interior arrangement....

Feb. 14

...and we have a name for this project… It will be OSIDIAS, and I’ve got to give my wife credit for coming up it. It’s sad how much I concentrated on this trivial little detail, but I was convinced that I wanted something completely original. I think I’ve found it.

Over the last few days I’ve been making up a parts list. It’s amazing how much aluminum will find it’s way in to this box. I’m planning on making the outer shell out of a single piece of aluminum. I’ll cut all the holes, then bend accordingly. Should be fun, huh? Also, as mentioned earlier, I’m going to braze all the parts together. This will free up any concerns about fastening parts together, and will guarantee a rock solid case. I also like the idea of no exposed fasteners anywhere on the case. This will be a new technique for me, and one that is rarely used in modding in general. I’m sure it’s been done, but I can’t name a project that incorporates it.

Feb. 16

I managed to get the interior tray about 90% finished over the weekend. Here is a pic of what I’ve got so far. Most of it will be bent out of a single piece, and the rest will be brazed together.

Project: Construction of a ATX cabinet! - Mr.Anki

Construction of a ATX cabinet!

 About the project:

When the time has come for a new cabinet. Enclosure will be built from scratch and look to be a fairly common tower, but with a somewhat spessiel front. In front will be mounted two 120mm fans and the pattern you see in the sketch above shall spit out. Inside I will divide the cabinet into two chambers. In the bottom will be the power supply and hard drives and put in the upper chamber will you find the rest of the parts. As the distinction between the chamber should I try to create an arc that you can see in the picture below. A window will be placed in one side door.
External dimensions of the box is: 56 x 54 x 24.5 cm

SX58J3 and a Corsair H50, will it fit?

Hello,
it’s been a long time I didn’t post (even though I read a lot)

I’d like to get a SX58J3 and I was wondering if it’s possible to replace the main fan/heat pipe with a Corsair H50? I know the H50 is a 120mm but I have no idea what the size of the Shuttle one. I searched but didn’t find the specs on that…

Thanks for help

Hello.

I’ve a sn78sh7 with 2 x 1 GB, 1 x laptop HD 80 GB, 1 x HD WD5000KS 500 GB and 1 x HVR3000 tunner. I’ll not install a dedicated grafic card becouse I’ll only use this system as a mediacenter (windows 7 Ultimate)

I would like to decrease the noise of the system.

can I replace the chipset fan with this pasive cooler ZM-NBF47?

and is posible to replace the psu by the fanless one like the PC62?

Thanks in advance
