I stumbled upon this "easy to install" mod when I was searching for a fan for my videocard. I came across the fan from a stock Intel cooler supplied with my Q6600, but most Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad processors have these supplied. The cool thing about it is that you can lose the shroud and it's also PWM which means silent running. The best thing about it though, is that it just "clicks" on your ICE heatsink and it is pretty snug fit too ! Mine isn't moving an millimeter ! I guess this mod is only for the smaller ICE heatsinks, I have an SG33G5 which has a 92mm fan fitted to it, standard. Here are some funkadelic pictures:

Enjoy this cheap ghetto mod, as most of you with an Intel probably have a fan lying around in a dark corner having no purpose in life.

Jejeje, Incredible mod, my congratulations!

How about the temperatures and silence? Is this fan already silent? becouse I had two or three, but never tryed one...

The only problem I could see, is that if you leave the support of the heatsink to the back of the shuttle, maybe is supporting the fan weight on the heatsink instead of on the case!

But really really good mod, I´ve never discover an utility for these fans!

CoreTemp is showing 30-35°C on the 4 cores (Q6600 @ 2.5GHz) in idle browsing mode. Noisewise is hard for me to measure, as I have removed the standard ICE fan a long time ago. Running on Medium fan setting (through BIOS), you can hear it but the Raptor drive makes more noise when seeking.

The fan itself is also pretty light and since the ICE heatsink is very light too, you don't have to worry about it weighing too much for your motherboard. Also because the heatsink is fastened to the case with adapter screws below the motherboard.

Nice catch, Phunc! I'll have to try this on a friend of mine's G2.

And btw, you can lower your temperature and noise a bit more by removing that honeycomb fan grill on the rear of the Shuttle and adding a wire fan grille.

Nice! Ive just zip tied the fan directly on to the heatsink myselves, instead of using the box that i should use with the fan..

I replaced the Intel fan with an Arctic Cooling 9 PWM, mounted outside the case. The change in temps is very minimal, maybe a few degrees lower than the Intel. The sound seems a little more pronounced but drowns away because of the constant soundwave. Hard to explain, but the Intel had a sort of fluctuating noise. I guess it is my fan that acts funny.

Trying it tonight. I've been scouring for some type of heat control on my PD955 Extreme. Thanks!

Sorry to resurrect such an old topic... but does anyone have the pictures or an exact location on the heatsink to clip the fan to? I was curious to do this myself with my G5 here but I can't seem to figure out how to exactly clip it. help?

again, very sorry to resurrect an old topic.

EDIT OF EDIT: This is the newer Intel stock fan that comes with the 45nm Core 2 Duo CPUs and I believe everything from the middle of 2008. See how the clips are built into the fan and how much smaller it is.

DOUBLE EDIT: I figured it out. I needed the OLDER Intel fan. I got one from a PC I was fixing for someone (was on a Celeron D 2.8GHz), cleaned it up and popped it on. it works great! here comes a pic.

it generally spins at about 2200 RPM at maximum. the old Shuttle fan was put onto the back as the pull fan at LOW speed, not ultra low and not medium. smart fan is overdoing it. it makes a constant buzz but nothing that most people can't get used to. I also recommend getting rid of the horrid honeycomb grille, as has been stated in the past.
