Hi everyone…

after -too- many years of good and trusty service, I have decided to retire my loyal SN45
I would like to build a new gaming shuttle on a budget
the SP35P2 is quite cheap and I think it’s my next move
the CPU will be core 2 - E8400 @3gHz / 4gig of ram
and I really like to fit a radeon HD5850

I know some people have a SP35P2 with a HD4870, and from what I’ve read, the HD5850’s power consumption is about the same if not less.
so I assume it will work on a 400w PSU

Do I miss some point ? will this configuration work ?

thx for your replies

HD 5850 has very low power consumption.. it is even lower than my GTS 250 before it. With a 3.4GHz Q9550 and the HD 5850 my system below peaks at under 200W full load (of course the components are undervolted to achieve this).

I have a 4890 and have zero power issues. Enjoy DX11.

Hello, I also have a Shuttle SP35P2 Pro and want to put a Radeon 5850 in it.  However, the Radeon 5850 needs 2 6-pin PCI-X power plugs and I only found one inside my SP35P2 Pro.  Is there a way to add another 6-pin PCI-X plug, because if not, then pixie or I will not be able to install a Radeon 5850, and instead we’ll have to find a card that only needs one PCI-X power plug.

Thx for any help!

If your card came with all the standard accessories, there should be an adapter that takes 2 4-pin molex plugs and converts to a 6-pin PCIe plug.

Hi there

The sp35 psu will cope with a 5870 no problem , so a 5850 will draw even less current. my only other comment regarding a graphic card would be to pick one with and enclosed cooler which will dump the majority of hot air via the rear exit grill.

Regarding your cpu choice, you really should consider a quad, as the majority of the latest games are optimized for multiple cores, a good choice would be a Q9550 with the latest stepping (Eo) as they require less voltage and overclocking them is a breeze, you will be limited by the motherboard on the shuttle as I doubt you will be able exceed 400 fsb on a quad (a dual core might reach 450 fsb).

Thanks so much for the power adapter info, you were completely on the ball!  Checked the box my current Geforce 8800GT was in, and voila!

One of the molex connectors is connecting my DVD player. How can I get around this without removing the DVD?
